The first ever camera trap video footage of the critically endangered cross river gorilla has been captured in Cameroon in research conducted by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

The cross river gorilla is a subspecies of the western gorilla that is only found in the rainforests that span the border region between south-western Cameroon and Nigeria. Fewer than 250 individuals are thought to remain in the wild and they are threatened by hunting and loss of habitat.
2010 Whitley Award winner, Louis Nkembi, and his NGO, the Environment and Rural Development Foundation (ERuDef), have been working with the Cameroon government to create new Protected Areas in the south west of the country that will improve conservation for these gorilla as well as chimpanzees and other endangered wildlife. Louis and his team are also working closely with local communities to introduce more sustainable livelihoods that will help to reduce the pressure on wild resources whilst raising awareness of the importance of conserving these critically endangered primates.
