Tune in for a dose of inspiration and optimism from Whitley Award winners driving remarkable outcomes for nature.
What makes a person dedicate their life to saving a frog? Or switch from protecting iconic species like gorillas in Rwanda – to cranes? What would you do if fields of local orchids just disappeared and you knew who was trafficking them?
Narrated by wildlife broadcaster Kate Humble and WFN Founder Edward Whitley, Season 2 of How to Save It speaks to the conservationists whose life choices are sustaining the wildlife and ecosystems we need to survive.
Tune in to the seven-part series to hear how a lack of funding to study orangutans led Ayu Oktaviani to Javan gibbons. Birds were Dr Andrés Link’s passion before he met brown spider monkeys in the Amazon. And her pet budgie Pom Pom sent Dr Yara Barros on a career path with birds before an unexpected swerve to jaguars. From happy coincidences, to clear choices; Dr Farina Othman just could not stand by when she saw Bornean elephants harassed with nowhere to move.

“When you listen to Farina talking about those elephants, you just think they could not have a better champion,” Kate says. “I just think people need to hear that it’s not hopeless, that if you as an individual have an idea, have a burning desire to protect, to do something kind of against the odds….. that’s what I love about the Whitley Award stories, all of them.”
With science, and nature, under threat like never before How to Save It speaks to the individuals taking on extraordinary challenges to save the planet in a reminder that together, in the words of WFN Ambassador Sir David Attenborough “we are powerful enough to save it.”
