WFN NextGen: Bat-Friendly Mezcal Tasting with Mexico’s ‘Bat Man’

Date: 8th November 2023
Time: 6:30 pm

Calling the next generation of nature lovers! join WFN NextGen for a fun evening of mezcal, bat conservation, and networking.

Did you know that tequila and mezcal wouldn’t exist without bats? Just a handful of bat species are responsible for pollinating the agave plant, which flower just once in their lifetime. Unfortunately, the tequila industry typically harvests agave before it flowers, turning areas of rich biodiversity into monocultures and harming the land, the plants, and the wildlife they support.

2012 Whitley Gold Award winner Rodrigo Medellin is a Mexican bat conservationist, and one of the pioneers of the Bat Friendly project, a certification process that ensures producers create tequila and mezcal that has actively encouraged bat pollination.

If you’re interested in learning more about his work, join us at the Old Sessions House, a courthouse-turned-corporate members club in Central London, and try bat-friendly mezcal for yourself!

Ticket includes a free mezcal (cocktail or neat) and light fare. 18+ event. Please be prepared to show ID.

About WFN NextGen:

WFN NextGen is a network and community of young professionals who are passionate about conservation. The goal of the programme is to channel the energy and enthusiasm of young people into raising funds for the grassroots initiatives of Whitley Award winners around the world.

One million species are threatened by extinction, yet only 4% of UK philanthropic giving is directed to the environment. Through fundraising challenges and events, NextGen hopes to leverage the passion and dedication of our network to collectively fundraise and help close this wildlife conservation funding gap.
